BIS Hallmarking & HUID

Every gold piece carries a verifiable six-digit HUID — here's what it means and how to check it yourself.

Since 2021, BIS hallmarking has been mandatory for gold jewellery sold in India above a certain purity threshold. It exists for one reason: so you don’t have to take a jeweller’s word for what you’re buying. Every gold piece we sell carries four distinct marks, stamped or laser-etched where you can see them.

The four marks

BIS logo
The triangular Bureau of Indian Standards mark, confirming the piece was hallmarked at a BIS-registered centre.
Purity grade
916 for 22K, 750 for 18K, 585 for 14K — the fineness in parts per thousand, not a batch or style code.
HUID
A unique six-digit alphanumeric code, different for every single piece — the reason hallmarking today is traceable in a way it wasn’t before 2021.
Jeweller’s mark
Our registered identification mark, tying the piece back to us specifically.

How to verify it yourself

Download the BIS CARE app (BIS’s own consumer app, free on Android and iOS), open the “Verify HUID” section, and type in the six-digit code from your piece. It will show the registered jeweller, the hallmarking centre, and the date of certification. If a code doesn’t resolve, that’s a piece you shouldn’t buy — from us or anyone else.

We encourage you to check it at the counter, before you pay, not after. It takes under a minute and it’s the whole point of the system.

What isn’t hallmarked, and why

Polki and kundan pieces are set in gold foil rather than a solid casting, and the setting itself often can’t carry a stamp without damaging the work — in these cases the gold content is certified separately in writing, and the piece’s net gold weight is stated on your invoice. Loose diamonds and gemstones aren’t hallmarked at all — they carry their own certification, which we cover separately.
